Rs 12.42 crore being spent on strengthening the banks of the Ghaggar River: Barinder Kumar Goyal
The Punjab Government is undertaking large-scale efforts to protect people from floods and ensure the safety of life and property across the state. Under this initiative, a special project worth approximately Rs12.42 crore is being implemented to strengthen the banks of the Ghaggar River.
This information was shared by Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal while laying the foundation stones at villages Andana and Makrour Sahib. He stated that under this project, the riverbanks near the bridge at village Andana will be strengthened with stone pitching at a cost of Rs1.83 crore.
Additionally, strengthening work will be carried out from Makrour Sahib to Karail at a cost of Rs 6.46 crore, and from Khanauri to Makrour Sahib at a cost of Rs 4.13 crore. In total, around 42 kilometers of the river stretch will be strengthened and raised under these projects.
The Cabinet Minister further stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government has already spent around Rs 4 crore earlier to strengthen the banks of the Ghaggar River. He added that due to these efforts, during the heavy floods of 2025, when the Ghaggar River flowed above the danger mark continuously for nearly 10 days, major losses in the area were successfully averted.
Goyal said that the primary objective of the government is to protect people from natural disasters and safeguard farmers’ crops. He added that strengthening the riverbanks will not only reduce the risk of floods but also support agricultural stability in the region.
He also assured that the Punjab Government will continue to prioritize such development works in the future and remains committed to the safety and welfare of the people. On this occasion, various administrative officials, representatives of AAP, dignitaries, and a large number of villagers were present.
