Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh on Tuesday evening visited Khanna Civil Hospital to review the quality of medical services and held a meeting with the doctors. Accompanied by Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, Dr. Singh categorically dismissed allegations of patient neglect raised by a political leader, labelling them as baseless and accusing the leader of indulging in “dirty politics” while criticizing irresponsible reporting by a section of media.
He said that some people cannot digest the fact that Punjab government is strengthening heath facilities across govt hospitals in state. While speaking to media persons, Dr. Balbir Singh stated that the allegations stem from a case involving a patient who visited the hospital a year ago with an acute heart attack.
The patient was promptly stabilized, received free thrombolytic treatment (valued at ₹25,000), and was referred to a higher medical facility for advanced care. The patient, who has a history of diabetes and hypertension and is known to be non-compliant with regular medication, later received a pacemaker and continued treatment at Sector 32, Chandigarh.
Health Minister Dr. Singh further elaborated that on May 17, 2025, the same patient arrived at Khanna Civil Hospital at approximately 11 a.m. in critical condition, presenting with a pulse rate of 116, random blood sugar of 410, blood pressure of 198/90, and oxygen saturation of 56%, alongside severe breathlessness.
Dr. Raghav, an orthopedic specialist on duty, immediately consulted a medical specialist via teleconference, provided emergency care to stabilize the patient, and arranged for transfer to a tertiary care hospital via a 108 Ambulance, ensuring continuity with the patient’s prior treatment.
The Health Minister praised the hospital staff for their swift and appropriate response, asserting that the patient received timely and effective care. He condemned the allegations as a politically motivated attempt to undermine the hospital’s reputation and urged the public to dismiss the misleading claims propagated by the Akali leader and amplified by irresponsible reporting.
Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond stated that the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab government is committed for the welfare of people and that is why, facilities across all sectors are being strengthened.
