Bhagwant Mann Government Plans Statewide Rollout of Mechanical Sweeping in Urban Areas

Reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner and greener Punjab, the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government is actively considering implementing mechanical sweeping across all Municipal Councils (MCs) in the state. This was stated by Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh during a trial run of mechanical sweeping machines on roads in Kharar and Mohali today.

Dr. Ravjot Singh explained that mechanical sweeping is intended to ensure efficient and effective cleaning of major city roads where such machines can be deployed. The initiative will involve two types of machines—smaller ones for narrower streets and larger units for main roads.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining urban cleanliness and sanitation, Dr. Singh said that this initiative aligns with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s directive to enhance the aesthetic appeal of cities. He noted that mechanical sweeping is already in operation in some major municipal corporations and will soon be extended to other urban local bodies as part of a larger beautification effort.

He clarified that the adoption of mechanical sweeping will not negatively affect the employment of existing sanitary workers. Additionally, the government does not plan to purchase these expensive machines outright. Instead, operations will be carried out on an Operating and Maintenance (O&M) basis, ensuring cost efficiency.

The Minister was accompanied by Chief Engineer of the Local Government Department, Ashwani Chaudhry; Municipal Engineer, MC Kharar, Shally Raj Garg; Executive Engineer, MC Mohali, Rajinder Kumar; and Executive Officer, MC Kharar, Gurbaksish Singh.
