NRI donates Rs 2 lakh to Maharaja Dalip Singh Memorial

Ludhiana : A Canada-based Karamjeet Singh Grewal on Friday handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik for the beautification of Maharaja Dalip Singh Memorial, commonly known as Bassian Kothi.
Grewal said that considering the historical importance of this memorial and to assist the administration in beautifying the memorial, he took this decision so that the younger generation remains abreast with the rich culture, heritage, history, and tradition of Punjab.
Expressing her gratitude for the gesture shown by Grewal, said that the amount contributed by him would definitely motivate other NRIs as well to assist the administration in restoring the pristine glory of the Maharaja Dalip Singh Memorial.
She said that Bassian Kothi was a more than 200-year-old monument of Sikh heritage, which was developed into a memorial in remembrance of the Late Maharaja Dalip Singh, the last Sikh Maharaja. It was at Bassian Kothi where Maharaja Dalip Singh was kept in captivity and arrested by the British in 1849 prior to his exile.
Deputy Commissioner said that the state government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was already making sincere efforts to develop Bassian Kothi as an international tourist hub and various development works are already underway there.
