Captain, his Congress goons’ assassinated democracy in municipal bodies’ elections: Harpal Singh Cheema

Chandigarh : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) strongly condemned the capturing of booths and attacks on the AAP workers by the Congress goons at various places across the state under the patronage of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in the municipal bodies’ elections on Sunday. In a statement issued from the party headquarters, senior leader of the party and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Punjab Assembly, Harpal Singh Cheema, said that democracy was being killed across Punjab today by Captain Amarinder and the Congress goons backed by him. He said that Captain Amarinder Singh had failed to deliver on his promises to the people and was now assassinating democracy. “Realising his personal responsibility, Captain Amarinder should resign from the post of Chief Minister,” he added.Cheema said that the Aam Aadmi Party had already expressed its suspicion that the Congress could go to any lengths to loot the elections and in this regard had also met the State Election Commission in this regard and submitted a memorandum, demanding the deployment of paramilitary forces in the local bodies’ elections. “But as it was not taken seriously, today democracy is being killed in Punjab. The AAP volunteers have been attacked by Congress goons at many places,” he added.
Cheema said that an Aam Aadmi Party volunteer was shot at in Patti while a volunteer was illegally arrested by the police.He said that similarly, in Tarn Taran, Rajpura, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Abohar, Jalalabad, Samana, Dhuri, Bhikhiwind and at many other places, the Congress goons tried to occupy the booths. Cheema said that in this way elections were being looted by intimidating the people and democracy was being destroyed. “The Congress had killed democracy by depriving the people of their right to vote with the help of government machinery. The Congress-backed officers who instead of doing their duty honestly, are working as Congress workers today, would be dealt with on the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party government in 2022,” said Cheema.Lashing out at Captain Amarinder Singh, Cheema said that Captain, fearing his defeat, had today resorted to blatant hooliganism by his Congress goons with the connivance of the government machinery. He said that Captain Amarinder Singh could not turn his defeat into victory by intimidating the people. Cheema said that a large number of Aam Aadmi Party candidates would win the local bodies’ elections.“Captain Amarinder Singh had made many promises to the people before coming to power, but power-drunk, he forgot everything,” he added. Cheema said that now when the fear of defeat was looming due to non-fulfillment of his promises; even sitting in a responsible position, the Congress was killing democracy in Punjab by giving a free hand to the goons. He said that the results coming on February 17 would teach the Congress, a lesson of hooliganism and show them the way to defeat.
