Lovely Professional University Celebrates Asian Games Triumph with Rs 1.14 Crores in ‘Award Money’

Jalandhar : Lovely Professional University (LPU) proudly celebrated the astounding achievements of its students at the 19th Asian Games 2023 held in Hangzhou, China. LPU’s student-athletes made a substantial contribution to India’s best-ever performance in the Asian Games, securing a total of 12 medals, including four gold medals.
Out of the forty LPU students who participated in the Asian Games, twenty, including nine members of the hockey team, played pivotal roles in India’s medal-winning journey. In recognition of their exceptional performances, LPU awarded cash prizes totaling Rs 1.14 Crores to all the participating athletes.
These talented students excelled in a diverse range of sports, including athletics, archery, shooting, boxing, rowing, hockey, wrestling, and more. Among the standout athletes honored were Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, archers Prathmesh Samadhan and Abhishek Verma, shooter Arjun Singh Cheema, boxer Lovelina Borgohain, rower Sukhmeet Singh, and hockey players Manpreet Singh and Varun Kumar. The Indian Hockey team, which clinched the gold and included nine LPU students, was captained by Harmanpreet Singh, with Hardik Singh serving as the Vice-Captain.
LPU students played a significant role in India’s impressive medal tally at the Asian Games, contributing to the nation’s fourth-place finish in the overall medals tally. In the field of archery, LPU students claimed four out of nine medals, including two gold medals.
The remarkable achievements of LPU athletes were a part of India’s largest-ever 655-member contingent at the games, with Lovlina Borgohain and Harmanpreet Singh leading the delegation. The LPU campus was brimming with celebratory fervor as champion athletes were welcomed with grand processions organized by LPU’s 250 schools and departments.
The campus atmosphere reverberated with a strong sense of nationalism in the presence of these accomplished athletes. Many of LPU’s sports achievers have also qualified for the upcoming Olympic Games, and they have expressed their commitment to winning more medals and bringing glory to both the country and the university.
LPU’s Chancellor and Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha, Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, offered his congratulations and encouragement to all the achievers, urging them to maintain their winning spirit for the continuous glory of the nation and the university. He assured them of LPU’s unwavering support in their pursuit of excellence in various activities.
The other honored sportspersons included members of the gold-winning hockey team, such as Mandeep Singh, Samsher Singh, Gurjant Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, and Sukhjeet Singh. Additionally, Charanjit Singh won a silver medal in Coxed Eight Rowing, and Preeti Razak showcased her shooting skills. Archers Simranjeet Kaur and Mrinal, boxers Parveen Hooda, Preeti, Jasmine, Arundhati, and Sachin, rower Parminder, athlete Ankita, footballer Jyoti Chauhan, handball team members Shalini, Mitali, Bhavana, Priyanka, Nidhi, and Diksha, as well as rugby team members Sandhya, Shikha, and Sweta Sahi, were also honored for their exceptional performances.
These accomplished athletes represent a diverse range of programs and sports, highlighting LPU’s commitment to promoting athletic excellence across various disciplines. They come from regular or distance education programs, including BA, MA, BCA, M.PEd, B.Sc, B.PEd, BPES, B.Ed, and even MA in Psychology and Public Administration.
