Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal Reviews Preparations for Surjit Hockey Tournament

The Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar reviewed the preparations for the 42nd Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament, scheduled to start from October 23 at the local Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park. Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, who is also the President of the Surjit Hockey Society, today had meeting with the local police, civil administration, and members of the Surjit Hockey Society to assess the arrangements for the upcoming 42nd edition of the Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament, which will be held from October 23 to November 1. 

He also issued necessary instructions to the concerned departments. On the occasion, DC Himanshu Aggarwal stated that the Surjit Hockey Tournament is a renowned event in the country and a matter of pride for Jalandhar. He highlighted the great enthusiasm among players to participate and among spectators to watch the tournament. 

He also informed that in keeping with Punjabi culture, daily Giddha and Bhangra competitions will be held during the daily matches for students from various schools and colleges. The winning team will receive a cash prize of ₹25,000, sponsored by Sukhwinder Singh Lally, Chairman, NGO Fikar-e-Hond.

Dr. Himanshu further announced that under the slogan “Watch Surjit Hockey – Win an Alto Car,” to generate enthusiasm for the game of hockey, every spectator attending the tournament will be given a coupon daily at the stadium entry gate for 10 consecutive days. The prize draw will take place immediately after the tournament’s final match. 

The car is sponsored by NRI Satnam Singh ‘Satta Pehalwan’ (America). Spectators will also be eligible to win other prizes like a fridge, LCD TV, washing machine, and microwave. The winning team will receive a cash prize of ₹ 5.51 lakhs from Gakhal Group America, and the runner-up team will get ₹2.50 lakhs from Ramtex Parmeshwari Silk Mill, Ludhiana. 

Additionally, the ‘Best Player’ of the tournament will be awarded a cash prize of ₹1.01 lakh by Ranbir Singh Tutt and Kamaljit Singh Hair in memory of their father. The DC confirmed that all arrangements for teams’ accommodation, transport, and security have been completed. This year, the tournament will be played under new floodlights installed at a cost of ₹90 lakhs, Dr. Himanshu added.

Iqbal Singh Sandhu, Surjit Hockey Society CEO informed that 16 top teams from the country including last year’s winner Indian Oil Mumbai and runner-up Bharat Petroleum Mumbai will participate in the tournament. Dr. Ashok Mittal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Jalandhar, will inaugurate the tournament, with Pradeep K. Sachdev, DGM (Retail Sales), Indian Oil, and Nitin Kohli, AAP Constituency Incharge, Jalandhar Central, as Guests of Honour. For the final match, Harpal Singh Cheema, Finance Minister, Punjab, will be the Chief Guest, while A.S. Sahni, Chairman, Indian Oil Mumbai, will be the Guest of Honour.
