DC Jaspreet Singh inaugurates Jalandhar District Badminton Championship

More than 600 players will participate in 35 events, 450 matches to be played in five days, matches to be live streamed

Jalandhar : Deputy Commissioner (IAS) S. Jaspreet Singh inaugurated the District Badminton Championship being organized by the District Badminton Association, Jalandhar, with support of Think-Gas and Adidas, at Raizada Hansraj Stadium, here today.

While motivating the players on this occasion, DC said, “Sports not only keep us fit but also provide an opportunity to make our parents, city, state and country proud.” He also praised the DBA, Jalandhar, for making excellent arrangements for the championship.

Talking about the championship, DBA Secretary and former National Player Ritin Khanna said that this time more than 600 entries have been received for as many as 35 events. “It is for the first time in the history of DBA that the winners will be awarded cash and other attractive prizes of more than Rs 3 lakhs”, he added.

Khanna informed that during the Championship, under-11, 13, 15, 17, 19 Boys-Girls and Men and Women Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles competition will be held, while adding, “In the Veteran category, events in the age group of 35 plus to 60 plus will be held.

About 450 matches will be played during the five-day championship.” Khanna also said that arrangements have been made to provide free refreshment to the players during the championship. “Matches are being Live Streamed”, he informed.

Think Gas, Adidas, MK Wires, Metro Milk, Jagatjit Industries, Savi International and LPU are the main Sponsors of this event. The closing ceremony of the championship will be held on August 7. During the closing ceremony, Director, Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Department, Shri Ghanshyam Thori (IAS), will distribute the awards to the winners.

Also, during the Championship, the first National Champion (1951) from Jalandhar, Shri Narinder Syal, will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.Meanwhile, in today’s function, DC gave Rs 11,000 each to Divyam Sachdeva, Liza Tank, Manya Ralhan, Samarth Bhardwaj, Ram Lakhan and Jaideep Kohli (all winners at the National Level).

On this occasion, prominent among others present include SDM Dr. Jai Inder Singh, Rakesh Khanna, Harpreet Singh, Aman Mittal, Mukul Verma, Naresh Budhia, Loveleen Kumar, Ranjit Singh and Dheeraj Sharma.
